Recently filled Position: Choral Director – Syracuse Gay and Lesbian Chorus
Prospective candidates will possess the educational preparation (a degree in Conducting, Vocal Music, or Music Education), a minimum of 3 years of choral conducting experience, and the creative, interpersonal, and administrative skills necessary to lead the Chorus musically and artistically in an SATB repertoire. The individual will work closely with the Board of Directors, Principal Accompanist, and various committees to plan and execute two (2) main concerts per year as well as several shorter community outreach performances. While this position is open to anyone regardless of sexual orientation, we are looking for a director who is comfortable either being out in the LGBT community or is an ally who is comfortable identifying themselves as director of a gay chorus.
The Choral Director shall:
• conduct rehearsals or appoint a replacement in case of absence from rehearsals;
• conduct concerts and performances;
• arrange and conduct auditions;
• work with the various committees to select music, prepare the Chorus for performance, and oversee the creative requirements of the Chorus;
• select musicians for performances as required;
• report to the Board of Directors at each regular Board meeting; and
• perform any other duties as seem appropriate for the Choral Director.
We are a non-auditioned chorus and heartily welcome new singing members to join us. Anyone is welcome to join during the first three weeks of our concert rehearsal season. At that time, the Choral Director will guide new members to one of the SATB sections that is most comfortable for their vocal range.
Our two main concerts are our December Holiday and Spring Pride concert in late spring. Rehearsals are each Monday evening from 7:00 to 9:15 at Plymouth Congregational Church, 232 E. Onondaga Street, Syracuse, NY, 13202, starting the first Monday after Labor Day and in February, respectively.
The deadline for applications was November 4, 2022. We were looking to fill the position starting in February 2023 for the upcoming Spring season. Concert dates are TBD.
